IUD and IUS

An intrauterine device (also referred to as the copper coil) is a small plastic T-shape that a doctor or nurse puts into your womb (uterus). It is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancies but does not protect against STIs.

How do they work?

IUD

A IUD does not release hormones, but instead releases copper into the womb and depending on the type, can last up to 5 or 10 years.

IUS

An IUS (intrauterine system) is like an IUD, but instead of releasing copper into the womb, it prevents pregnancy by releasing the hormone progestogen. It can also be an effective treatment for heavy periods.
Again, if you change your mind about this method of contraception, a medical professional can remove it from you at any point.
